Yumeiro Patissiere

Summary:
Ichigo Amano is a clumsy girl that wants to be a pastry chef. When she enrolls in to a culinary school called St. Marie Academy, she meets the spirit of sweets.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • I can't find the OP title or artist at the moment but it's super super happy. It is a good showcase of how Japanse people sometimes like to put together happy sounding English words with a 'go!' on the end and shout it.
  • Only in an anime will a small girl fall down a flight of stairs and get asked, "What are you doing? Geez."
  • The differences between her and her sister creates a feeling of failure in Ichigo, which I think will add a good complexity to this show.
  • In fact, they remind me of the smart sister/dumb embarrassing sister skits from MADtv.
  • I wish my grandma was an awesome pastry chef.
  • It's hard to tell what exactly the cakes in the show look like, because they're all glowing.
  • I'm glad this little girl has such a supportive family, I wish more families were like that.
  • The ending is just as sweet as the rest of the show, with little chibis flying everywhere.
  • I love the cards at the end that show you clips of France and the development of the anime. It almost reminds me of Sailor Says, but without the advice.

End Thoughts?
This was so sweet I just might watch again.

Kimi ni Todoke

Summary:
Sawako is a girl that has always been called Sadako, because of how creepy she seems. Everyone in school thinks she has supernatural powers while in reality she is a normal girl wishing to have a social life and a boyfriend just like everyone else. She has a crush on her classmate Kazehaya, who is the only one in the school that doesn't treat her like "Sadako".

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is "Kimi ni Todoke" by Tanizawa Tomofumi. I absolutely love it! It's a good song yeah, but the art style of the background I adore.
  • Sawako is such a genuinely good person, I love her to death. She reminds me a lot of Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket in this respect.
  • Kazehaya is such a sweet guy, if there were more guys like this there wouldn't be divorce!
  • Romantic anime always seem to start at the beginning of summer break.
  • The ED is "Kataomoi" by Chara. It's a cute little song, and again I adore the artwork. It makes my soul happy :D

End Thoughts?
This made me happier and happier as I watched it, I will watch again :D

Kobato

Summary:
Kobato has a wish that she wants fulfilled, to do so she must go to Earth and fill a bottle with scarred hearts.

Her stuffed animal, Ioryogi leads her through her trials.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is "Magic Number" by Maaya Sakamoto. It's a lovely song with images of Kobato being cute,
  • Ioryogi creeps me out. He shoots stuff out of his mouth!
  • Fujimoto is pretty cute, his look kind of reminds me of Kio from Loveless, but with a different personality. ( ... and longer hair thats brown)
  • Kobato gets on my nerves with her apologies, and screeching when excited voice.
  • Kobato has to pass tests in order to get a bottle to put the scarred hearts in but they never tell you the nature of the tests, which I don't like. You can't guess either because she takes out a ladies trash and makes nabe for someone? Bleh.
  • CLAMP has improved on their habit of making characters limbs ridiculously long.
  • Kobato is so gracious and kind but Jesus, she's annoying.
  • The ED is "Jellyfishes Confession" by Megumi Nakajima. It's kind of slow and sleepy, but it's fun to watch the bottle spin and see where the shards go.

End Thoughts?
Even if Kobato's wide eyed screeching gets on my nerves it was really cute, I might watch this again.

Miracle Train

Summary:
There is an urban legend that a secret subway car exists - a luxury car full of gorgeous men. This train appears to women in love trouble, or in other words helpless. They take their stress away!

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is "Montage" and I'm pretty sure it's all the seiyuu singing. It reminds me of host club, but with trains.
  • All of the man hunks in this show are named after different train stations around Tokyo. Of all of the things I've seen personified this is the first time I've seen it apply to train stations, that's neat.
  • This show is kind of creepy. You feel like crap and get on a train to go home only to find it full of bishies that just kind of appear behind you, and everyone knows your name and your problem.
  • I'll be honest, I didn't finish this show because it was horribly boring. The entire show takes place in the train and all they do is talk about random crap.
  • The ED is "Stories" Shuhei Kita. It's a little soft rock, with views of the stations together in casual scenes.

End Thoughts?
It's cute, but incredibly boring. It's nice if you want to look at some pretty guys but that's all the value this show holds.

Sora no Otoshimono

Summary:
So there's this kid, Tomoki. He has weird dreams at night of a girl he does not know and can't remember when he wakes up. He reluctantly goes to the school shut-in-pervert-nerd (that somehow has his own room of stuff in the school building) to ask for help. He suggests that it's related to a giant hole that has been travelling through the air around the Earth. They arrange to meet when the hole travels over the town, and out pops a "pet-class angelroid" that imprints herself to him. She claims, "I am here to fulfill your every desire, my master." After a wish that accidentally erases humanity Ikarus turns it all in to a dream and decides to stay by his side.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is "Ring my Bell" by Blue Drops. They don't actually play it in the first episode, so right now I have nothing to say.
  • The Angelroid, Ikarus, is in a top that covers the middle of her back and her nipples. Oh, and a miniskirt.Wow.
  • Ikarus can fulfill any wish Tomoki has. Of course, the second one he chooses is to turn invisible and spy on his neighbor while she puts on her bra, naturally complaining that "it doesn't fit!" and "they grew again!" Again, wow.
  • The third wish is to stop time while he runs around his campus naked. He also takes this time to run to the nearest adult bookstore.
  • They try to put emotional importance on their relationship when he accidentally erases humanity. Through tears he asks her to stay, boo hoo hoo. They showed too many shots of her chain stuck between her boobs for me to care.
  • The ED is "Soba ni Irareru daka de" also by Blue Drops. This was the best part of the episode.

End Thoughts?
No.

Letter Bee

Summary:
Amberground is a place of perpetual night lit only by one artificial sun that is always overtop of the capital city Akatsuki. Gauche Suede is a Letter Bee, basically a risky business-will-deliver-anything postman. Gauche picks up an odd package, a boy named Lag Seeing who has lost his mother.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is "Hajimari no Hi" by Suga Shikao feat. Mummy-D, It's cool and mellow and (abstract as this may be) fits the color pallet for this anime.
  • I'm not feeling the moe.
  • I love the color pallet for this anime! X3
  • I'm not sure how I feel about Lags's flashbacks, I feel there is always better ways to tell what happened in the past but he is a kid, I guess.
  • This anime follows it's manga to the T, for now.
  • The ED is "Hatenaki Michi" by Himeka. It reminds me of a jpopish FullMetal Alchemist ending. I'm not sure that I'd download it to my Zune, probably not.

End Thoughts?
It's kind of boring, but I'm sure it will pick up. I might continue watching, but I detest moe and Lag gets on my nerves. I'll put this in the maybe pile.

Sacred Blacksmith

Summary:
Cecily Campbell is a knight of the Knight Guards of the Third Independent Trade City. She fights with a sword held down by her grandfather and father. During battle, it breaks. Her life is saved by a mysterious apathetic swordsman named Luke. Luke fights with a sword forged by his late father, which too breaks. He and a small girl named Lisa can forge swords by (what I'm calling for now) magic. That is all you learn from the first episode.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is "Justice of Light" by Mayumi Gojo, it really gives a theme to the show and sets a nice tone of destiny and fate. I like it.
  • Apathetic characters are becoming quiet popular, but Luke is apathetic in an intriguing way. This leaves you with wanting to learn more about him.
  • Character design wasn't incredibly unique, but it was clean and easy on the eyes.
  • This show has excellent writers, because the story and dialogue flows very smoothly.
  • The ED is "Miracle Happy Day" by Aki Toysaki. Its cute but not in a sugary way, and is calming as characters flow across the screen. I'd probably skip it just to save time.

End Thoughts?
I really liked this one, I will definitely continue watching.

Inuyasha -Final Act-

Summary:
This series continues off from Inuyasha.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • Ah, yay for Do As Infinity! They made the inspiring and upbeat OP that I was hoping for for the much awaited anime ending to Inuyasha.
  • The Shikon Jewel hasn't been completed just yet but it's close, let's hope it doesn't take another 300 episodes.
  • Nothing much has changed. Kagura is still fighting for her heart back, Kikyo is still wondering around half dead. Although this episode gives us a sweet little Sango-Kohaku reunion.
  • The ending theme is heavy on the visuals as usual, but acts as a sort of recap of the beginning of Inuyasha. It also fills you in on bits of the story, in a visual way. The best part? Seeing Inuyasha and Kagome's pinkies connected by the red string of fate. Adorable.

End Thoughts?
I really enjoyed the last chapter of the manga, so I'll keep watching this one in hopes that it wont last forever and give me the sweet romantic ending that I've been pining for.

Seitokai no Ichizon

Summary:
A school council entirely elected by popular vote that really really wants to have their own anime, made all about them. This series is a parody on just about everything (notably: Haruhi Suzumiya, Dragon Ball Z, Kuroshitsuji.) I couldn't make out much of a story through the virgin and flat chested jokes.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The OP is breezy and cute and is the only serious part of the show.
  • So many parodies all at once I couldn't count them.
  • Character designs hurt my face.
  • The ED reminds me of this strand of words: Super Love Kawaii Candy Doki Doki! Except, they're all in Mikuru's bunny suit from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Ending Thoughts?
Get this thing away from me, quickly.

Side Note #1

I will be skipping A Certain Special Railgun since it's a side story to another anime.

Armed Librarians: The Book of Bantorra

Summary:Long after you die and have been buried, your soul fossilizes into a book. This book contains your entire life story. It is the duty of the Armed Librarians to protect them. The Sindeki Church appears to be the enemy of the Armed Librarians. The Sindeki Church uses humans as slaves and has nicknamed them Meats. Years ago a woman named Shiron Byacornise supposedly belonged to the church and was the only person with the antidote to Dragon Pneumonia which was killing off hundreds of people. She infected other people with it in order to sell more of the cure. This is about all I could get from the first episode alone, this series is extremely deep.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The opening scene is so deep and philosophical, but !suddenly tits! ruins it.
  • I hardly ever hear serious sounding classical OPs, points for the Armed Librarians!
  • Woah, deep.
  • The ending is soft and upbeat, showcasing the Armed Librarians in various poses. I'd just skip it to save time.

End Thoughts?
I will definitely watch more to understand better what is going on. I have the feeling this series will be really good.

Kampfer

Summary:
Once you are chosen by the Moderators, you must become a 'Kampfer" or elite fighter. All Kampfer must be female, so if you're a guy say goodbye to your testosterone. At least though you get a warning, because the bracelet permanently attached to the wrist of Kampfers glows before you transform. Natsuru Seno is the guy with the pretty bracelet that gets to turn in to a girl at awkward times. Poor guy never really knows what's going on, and keeps getting chased by a redhead with a gun. Also, his friend Sakura never questions why shoolgirls are jumping on top of traffic lights and pointing guns at her. The "entrail animal series" of plushie seems to be the personal guide for Kampfers. When you just become a Kampfer your transformations are random but once you mature other Kampfers and the will to fight will set it off. Not only does this guy go through the embarrassment of suddenly being a girl, his crush decides she wants to hook up with his Kampfer form. That sucks.

Fine Points/Thoughts:

  • The opening scene is so action packed! Cute girls in school uniforms shooting guns at each other = hooray!
  • The OP is bright and sugary, but the giant stuffed animals destroying buildings makes me smile.
  • With these transformation scenes, I'm having flashbacks to Sailor Moon Stars.
  • Yes, I understand Natsuru is a boy. I understand that it is funny when he transforms in to a girl and suddenly has boobs. I do not understand why this is a constant gag.
  • I could have lived without Akane Mishima being a shy librarian girl that doesn't talks to guys much and therefore stutters while talking to them. She should be in her Kampfer form at all times.
  • All of the words for the fighters and their techniques are German, yay German! Why the characters need German-Japanese dictionaries to know what their powers are I don't know.
  • This anime places a lot of importance on gender. You have to be female in your Kampfer form, and the high school has separate male and female wings.
  • The ED is very jpop, but the main characters are dancing so fast that it hurts my soul and shoves a big serving of "fuck you!" in to the face of physics.

End Result?
You'd have to have some kind of special interest to keep watching this. It's not really generic, but it does nothing to keep you coming. Semi-original, which I like. I might watch the second episode just to see Akane's Kampfer form. Maybe.

Nyan Koi

Summary:
So there's this guy, Kousaka Junpei. He has a crush on a blonde named Mizuno. Oh, but she loves cats. And isn't this the darndest, he is allergic to them. I don't think there isn't a second of this show not spent announcing that this guy is allergic to cats. Of course, he is the odd one out because, "the Kousaka family is full of cat lovers!" They own a fat cat that wears a handkerchief that they lovingly refer to as Nyamsas. Eventually Nyamsas starts talking to Junpei and he just brushes it off as still dreaming. Nyamsas isn't the only one, Junpei starts hearing the voice of any cat he walks past. We learn that he gained this ability when he meant to kick a can in to a trash can, but it bounced out and in to a roadside cat shrine and knocked off the statues head. After bumping in to a monk and some cats he learns that if he does not to 100 good deeds for cats, he will turn in to one himself!

Fine Points

  • The opening theme is ... catchy? I can throw it in the bin with all the other brightly colored happy sounding anime opening themes.
  • I don't think this show had a character designer, because all of the male characters look the same: beady eyes, straight eyebrows, and a mop of spiky hair. All the females are altered archetypes that look like they were drawn circa 2003.
  • If you're not a cat lover this probably won't interest you, but there is some ironic comedy in here somewhere.
  • The ending theme is cute, but not revolutionary. A 'kawaii' song with paper cutouts of the characters on a background, doing stuff and things.

End Result?
Damn, I love cats. Even though it's a bit generic, I LOVE CATS. Ugh. Because of that I find a lot of things in this show too cute not to watch casually. I'll probably watch more of this.

I was never good at moderation

Hey. So, have you ever gotten that feeling when you've watched so much anime that your brain seizes up, nothing else matters, and an odd foam drips from your mouth? I've determined that this phenomena occurs when we overdose on anime. The following months are a blur of large eyes, panty shots, and occasional iching spells.

More importantly I created this blog to review select new series. This comes in hopes that this does not happen to you. I've already rooted out what seems to be the most promising series of the fall 2009 season. I've chosen:
